Exercise and Your Immune System

Day 14 of “social distancing” and I feel a lot like Tom Hanks in Castaway. Only difference is my best friend isn’t a volleyball named Wilson, it’s a dumbbell and he doesn’t (yet) have a name. While daily workouts are providing an outlet for lots of stress, those 20-30 mins are also serving my body well. While hunkering down in my house, daily workouts are serving my immune system well.

  1. Just like a healthy diet, exercise can contribute to general good health and therefore to a healthy immune system. It may contribute even more directly by promoting good circulation, which allows the cells and substances of the immune system to move through the body freely and do their job efficiently.
  2. Exercise can also keep your body functioning well, since research shows that it reduces inflammation and supports infection-fighting cells.
  3. Exercise slows down the release of stress hormones. Some stress increases the chance of illness. Lower stress hormones may protect against illness.
